I'm so glad you're here. I'm Danielle, a fine art wedding & lifestyle photographer with a focus on capturing magical moments.
A rainy-day Chicago Blackstone Hotel wedding sounds enchantingly romantic, right? With a dash of Jewish tradition, elegant details, and an adorable couple, Sarah and Sean’s celebration was just that and more! Theirs was definitely a wedding day to remember.
I first met Sarah and Sean at their engagement session the year before their wedding. We spent a perfect sunny Sunday afternoon walking around a trail near the river in the South Loop area of Chicago, and then did an outfit change and headed to the Field Museum–which is always a favorite of mine. It was a stylish, fun, and elegant shoot and was a perfect precursor for their wedding day, which had the same vibes!
Zoom through the next few months to April, and we met at The Blackstone Hotel in downtown Chicago on a rainy day for their wedding! I adore shooting at The Blackstone—the lighting is amazing, and the vintage décor is perfect for chic detail and prep shots. Sarah’s exceptionally stunning details elevated the look even more! The invites, the florals, the shoes, the PEARL VEIL—like, come on. She curated every piece for these timeless detail shots.
Once everyone was ready, Sarah and Sean did their priceless first look at the neighboring Grant Park. Luckily, the rain subsided long enough for us to get our couple and wedding party photos before it started again. I especially love The Blackstone as a wedding venue because of its proximity to so many other great photo locations. I love this part of the park (it gives European vibes, right?). Of course, shooting on Michigan Ave is always iconic.
Next up, Ketubah and ceremony time! As the ceremony begins, the rabbi leads the couple through the Jewish wedding traditions. The ketubah is a beautifully designed Jewish marriage contract signed and witnessed by close family and friends. Then, they went through the full traditional Jewish ceremony (breaking of the glass and all!). After the ceremony, guests gathered in the hotel’s grand reception hall for cocktails and a joyous celebration. As the evening unfolds, the guests dance, laugh, and celebrate the union of two souls.
We ended this lovely evening with two of my favorite things—a dress change (um, hello sparkles!!!!) and a nighttime shoot with a champagne pop. I don’t think there is a better way to end the night. Sarah & Sean’s Chicago Blackstone Hotel wedding was overall incredible—one I won’t soon forget (or ever stop sharing photos from ).
Planning a wedding is an exciting journey filled with countless decisions and, let’s be honest, a lot of Pinterest scrolling. Whether you’re newly engaged or just helping a friend, today, I’m here to help you navigate one of the most fun parts of wedding planning: curating an elegant wedding style. Imagine a day that exudes sophistication, charm, and timeless beauty—sounds dreamy, right? Let’s dive into how you can make that dream a reality.
Before you start booking venues or trying on dresses, take some time to envision what elegance looks like to you. Is it a classic ballroom affair with chandeliers and a string quartet? Or maybe your style leans toward an intimate garden ceremony with trailing greenery and subtle floral arrangements? Spend time gathering inspiration from bridal magazines, websites, and social media (you can find me @danielheinsonphotography).
Create a mood board that captures the essence of your vision, focusing on colors, textures, and themes that resonate with your idea of an elegant day.
Color plays a crucial role in setting the tone for your wedding. For an elegant look, consider choosing a simple and sophisticated color palette. Think soft neutrals like ivory, champagne, and taupe, complemented by metallic accents such as gold or silver. Incorporate deeper shades like navy blue, emerald green, or burgundy for a classic yet rich aesthetic. Aim to keep the palette cohesive and understated so each element complements the theme rather than competing with the others. Less is more!
Your venue is the canvas for your wedding day. Look for venues known for their elegance—these could range from historic estates to modern art galleries. Consider spaces with beautiful architectural details, such as grand staircases, ornate ceilings, or manicured gardens.
An elegant venue doesn’t have to be extravagant; sometimes, simplicity speaks volumes.
Classic silhouettes and refined details can elevate elegant attire. For the bride, consider a gown like Sarah’s with modern lines, lace detailing, or a graceful train. Fabrics like satin, silk, and chiffon are timeless choices. For the groom, a well-tailored suit or tuxedo in a classic color will always be in style. Don’t forget about the bridal party—keeping their attire simple and in harmony with your theme will accentuate the overall elegance of your day.
Opt for tasteful floral arrangements with seasonal blooms and greenery. Use quality linens, and consider elegant touches like candelabras or crystal glassware to accentuate the dining experience. Personalized touches, like handwritten place cards or a vintage-inspired cake, can add unique charm without overwhelming the aesthetic.
Lighting is another way to transform a space and infuse it with warmth and romance. Utilize soft, ambient lighting to create an inviting atmosphere. Candles, fairy lights, and chandeliers are all excellent choices to enhance the venue’s natural beauty. For outdoor weddings, consider string lights, uplighting, or lanterns for added ambiance as the sun sets.
While elegance is often associated with a certain level of formality, don’t forget to infuse your personality into the celebration. Whether through a signature cocktail, custom monogram, or meaningful reading during the ceremony, these personal touches are what your guests will remember and cherish. Don’t be shy about incorporating your personality into your wedding day—it will enhance the experience for you and your guests.
To craft an elegant wedding, consider pairing personal taste with classic elements that stand the test of time. By staying true to your vision and focusing on timeless details, you’ll create a wedding style that is as beautiful and unique as your love story. This day is your celebration, so let it reflect who you are as a couple with grace and sophistication. Whether surrounded by hundreds of friends and family or sharing an intimate moment with a few loved ones, make sure your wedding reflects your unique journey together.
Here’s to planning the elegant wedding of your dreams!
