I'm so glad you're here. I'm Danielle, a fine art wedding & lifestyle photographer with a focus on capturing magical moments.
As a Chicago proposal photographer, I get to witness some truly magical moments. Nothing fills my heart more than capturing the joy of a genuine surprise proposal. Allen approached me with his plan to propose to Rachel during their routine Saturday morning walk — a simple yet profound idea that I adored!
Every Saturday, they enjoy a stroll through Lincoln Park, starting with a visit to the farmers market and a coffee in hand. However, this particular morning held a special surprise. As they reached the iconic Bridge Over South Pond, Allen seized the moment and proposed. Rachel responded with a resounding “Yes!” and I had to reach for my tissues.
One of the challenges I face as a proposal photographer in a bustling city like Chicago is capturing these intimate moments without the intrusion of passersby. Yet, the unexpected photo bomber—a cute kiddo zipping past on a scooter—only added a touch of humor and authenticity to the scene, reminding us that sometimes, it’s those imperfect elements that make a memory truly perfect.
After the proposal, the celebration continued, and we took a moment to admire the stunning ring before exploring the picturesque surroundings of the Lincoln Park Zoo area. Documenting their newly engaged glow in such a vibrant setting was a photographer’s dream.
In essence, turning a routine morning into an unforgettable one is what makes my job so incredibly rewarding. It’s about finding the magic in the mundane and capturing the love stories that unfold quietly but profoundly in the heart of Chicago.
Continuing the story of Rachel and Allen, their morning could not have been more perfect, and it highlights just how magical a well-planned surprise proposal can be. If you’re thinking about planning your own surprise proposal, working closely with a proposal photographer is key to capturing every unforgettable moment. I specialize in artful, authentic photography that captures the beauty of the moment in real-time. No forced smiles here!
The location of your proposal can add so much meaning to your moment. Think about places that are significant to you as a couple, like where you had your first date, your favorite park, or even a stunning viewpoint you both love. Allen chose Lincoln Park because it holds fond memories for him and Rachel, making the moment even more special.
Lighting can dramatically affect your photos, so consider the time of day when you plan to propose. Early morning or late afternoon, known as “golden hours,” often provide soft, flattering light. Additionally, think about the crowd factor. A quieter time can ensure a more intimate proposal and better photos if you prefer.
Discuss all the details with your photographer ahead of time. I can help you decide on the exact spot, considering both the meaning and aesthetics, as well as the logistics of capturing the moment without being too conspicuous. As a proposal photographer, I always work with clients to scout locations beforehand, ensuring we have a clear plan that keeps the proposal a surprise.
Weather can be unpredictable, especially in a city like Chicago. Have a backup plan in case of rain or extreme conditions. Sometimes, these alternative plans lead to unexpectedly wonderful moments and photos. Clear umbrellas or scarves and coats can make the moment look like a scene from a romantic movie!
While you don’t want to give away the surprise by overdressing, encourage your partner to wear something you both would be happy to remember in your photos. A simple heads-up about taking some nice pictures together after visiting a new place or meeting up with friends after might be a good excuse.
Ask your photographer to arrive early to capture candid shots of you and your partner approaching the spot or engaging in a pre-proposal activity. I love a good undercover mission! These photos add to the narrative and enrich the story of your day.
Create a subtle signal to let your photographer know exactly when you are about to propose. This could be something like taking your hands out of your pockets, a specific word, or a certain gesture. This ensures that your photographer is ready to capture the moment your partner says “yes!”
Once the proposal has happened, and your partner has (hopefully!) said yes, it’s the perfect opportunity to have a mini-engagement session immediately afterward. Allen and Rachel walked around the Lincoln Park Zoo area, which allowed them to soak in the moment and created a beautiful continuation of their engagement story.
Lastly, and most importantly, remember to be in the moment. This once-in-a-lifetime event marks the beginning of a new chapter in your lives. Trust your photographer to capture the event, and focus on the incredible experience of proposing to your partner.
Think ahead about how you’d like to celebrate immediately after the proposal. Some couples enjoy having a quiet moment together, while others might want to share the excitement with friends and family nearby. You might even have your photographer continue to capture these joyous post-proposal moments.
Remember, while you can plan everything down to the last detail, the small, unexpected moments can often make your proposal even more memorable. Just like the child on the scooter in Rachel and Allen’s photos, these little imperfections can add a genuine and joyful quality to your engagement memories.
Your surprise proposal is not just a question but a beautiful, unforgettable event. Just like Rachel and Allen, you’ll be able to look back on your engagement day with joy and fond memories, beautifully preserved in the art of photography. Here’s to love, surprises, and perfectly captured moments! Don’t hesitate to ask for help–I love photographing proposals of all kinds, from intimate moments to grand affairs.
