I'm so glad you're here. I'm Danielle, a fine art wedding & lifestyle photographer with a focus on capturing magical moments.
Some proposals are beautifully planned. Others are wonderfully spontaneous. Caitlin and TJ’s Chicago rooftop proposal at The Robey Hotel in Wicker Park was both thoughtfully orchestrated and completely swept up in the unexpected. And thanks to a sudden dust storm that rolled through the city that day, their proposal felt even more cinematic, emotional, and unforgettable.
TJ envisioned a private rooftop moment overlooking Chicago, followed by a celebration with their closest people. What he didn’t foresee? A dramatic weather event that added a unique ambiance to the day.
But honestly, it couldn’t have been more perfect.
The Robey stands out as one of Chicago’s most stylish boutique hotels. Its rooftop offers sweeping views of Wicker Park and the city skyline. Rooftops provide fabulous proposal spots—removed from the bustle, creating a private moment with spectacular views and unexpected thrill.
TJ knew this rooftop would be the perfect place to ask Caitlin to spend forever together.
The best surprise proposals are those where the other person is completely unaware. Caitlin had no idea what was coming because TJ said they were headed to a party at The Robey. Since they were already dressed up, it felt natural. Arriving early to a quiet rooftop, Caitlin simply assumed they were the first ones there. (And, in a way, all of that was true. She just didn’t know it was their party!)
Meanwhile, I waited quietly, curious how TJ would get Caitlin to the rooftop without raising suspicion. His plan worked perfectly. She took the bait, believing they were just early—the perfect cover.
And then, everything changed.
Just as TJ prepared to propose, a dust storm crept toward downtown. (Thankfully, it remained at a distance for the duration of our rooftop occasion). The sky shifted as sunlight shone through the gaps—almost like a natural direct flash—hazy around the edges and cinematic in the best possible way.
It was one of those happy coincidences that photographers secretly love. We were blessed with the kind of photogenic atmosphere you can’t plan for, but that elevates everything.
The wind whipped around them. The golden haze painted the city in soft, surreal light. And in that electric pause, TJ dropped to one knee.
Caitlin’s reaction was immediate and heartfelt—pure surprise, pure joy, pure emotion. Every feeling flashed across her face. She even knelt down with him, which was so sweet! The proposal was a whirlwind in every sense of the word — the gusts were strong above the city! — and you could feel how genuine the moment was.
As a photographer, these moments make me teary-eyed behind the camera. Capturing authentic reactions—impossible to stage or replicate—makes photos sweet memories you feel every time you see them. While I’m a fine art photographer, candid moments like these call for a more photojournalistic approach, and I love blending the two styles.
Of course, Caitlin gave an emphatic, “Yes!” But TJ didn’t stop there; he had another surprise.
After Caitlin said yes, friends and family appeared to celebrate. TJ had flown loved ones in, turning a private moment into a joyful celebration! He knew she’d want her favorite people there. Transitioning from an intimate proposal to party mode made the experience even more festive and fun.
Caitlin’s reaction to seeing everyone was almost as emotional as the proposal. The hugs, laughter, and excitement created a beautiful continuation of the moment. It felt spontaneous to Caitlin, but TJ had it all thoughtfully planned.
And yes—in true weather fashion, the dust storm made itself known that evening. I’m glad it held off for the proposal, but getting home afterward turned into an adventure. I ended up biking through the storm, which felt fitting after such a dramatic, unforgettable day. Worth it, nonetheless!
If you’re unsure about professional proposal photography, Caitlin and TJ’s story shows why hiring a photographer matters. Here’s why:
The moment someone realizes they’re about to be proposed to happens once. You can’t recreate that surprise, reaction, or joy. Having a photographer means you’ll always relive that exact moment—the smiles, the tears, the disbelief, the thrill, and everything in between.
If you ask a friend or family member to photograph your proposal, you run several risks.
First, your partner may see—and recognize—them, tipping them off to the surprise. Hiring a photographer—a stranger—is less likely to raise a red flag.
Additionally, your friend or family member may not anticipate the moment and reactions. Everything happens quickly. They might miss the best angle for documenting the proposal. I can adjust and move as needed, so you won’t end up with your partner’s back to the camera when they’re most surprised. I’ll capture each reaction as it happens, like a picture book telling a story.
And finally, if you invite loved ones to celebrate, they’ll want to be present with you—not behind the lens, stressing about getting the best shots. That’s a lot to ask of a loved one. It’s better to leave that task to someone trained for it.
When Caitlin realized what was happening, her reaction was genuine—no posing, no direction, just her authentic emotion. These shots become the most cherished photos, since the adrenaline of the moment has a way of blurring memories.
As a bonus, one of the best parts of a proposal session is that you’re already dressed for the occasion. Afterward, we can capture relaxed portraits that can double as engagement photos while you’re still riding the excitement of the moment. It’s the perfect opportunity for natural, joyful pictures.
From the quiet rooftop anticipation to the emotional proposal and surprise celebration, Caitlin and TJ’s experience became a chapter in their story—not just a moment. Documenting it lets you remember the whole experience, start to finish.
These photos often become some of the most meaningful images in a couple’s life together. They mark the beginning of a new chapter — one filled with anticipation, joy, and excitement for what’s ahead.
Caitlin and TJ’s Chicago rooftop proposal at The Robey was filled with unexpected twists — dramatic weather, cinematic light, raw emotion, and a surprise celebration surrounded by loved ones. It was thoughtful, spontaneous, and completely unforgettable.
And honestly, that’s what makes the best proposals.
Not perfection.
Not flawless timelines.
But genuine moments and a little bit of magic you never saw coming. 💍✨
