If you’re considering a Chicago elopement, Megan and Ross’s day gives a blueprint for turning a City Hall ceremony into a full-on Chicago celebration. After moving to Chicago from Ireland a few years ago, they chose to get married in the city that quickly became home, starting with a Chicago City Hall ceremony and followed by portraits at some of their favorite downtown locations.
From art galleries to historic architecture and their neighborhood with their pup, their day was an iconic Chicago tour with plenty of time to soak it all in.
If you’re planning your own celebration, this Chicago City Hall elopement guide will help you envision what your day could look like — and how to keep it stress-free while still experiencing some of the best of the city.
Megan and Ross began their day with a short ceremony at Chicago City Hall, a simple way to officially tie the knot before heading out on a romantic newlywed photoshoot through downtown.
But first, we need a moment for their flawless style. One of the things I loved most about their day was how effortlessly chic it felt. Megan wore a structured white A-line mini dress paired with a birdcage veil. Modern, timeless, and perfect for an elopement. Ross kept things classic and polished in a navy suit, complementing the overall look without going too formal. Together, they struck that ideal balance that works so well for city elopements.
City Hall ceremonies are typically brief, leaving plenty of time to explore afterward. That’s one of the biggest advantages of choosing a Chicago City Hall elopement: you can build the rest of your day around locations that matter to you.
After the ceremony, we visited the Art Institute of Chicago for portraits. Megan loves art, so we walked through galleries and stopped at her favorite pieces, collaborating on some creative shots.
These quieter moments — walking through the museum, pausing in front of meaningful artwork, enjoying the experience — are often what make elopement days feel so special and unique. You’ll probably remember your mini tour around the city more than the ceremony itself.
The Art Institute is also a wonderful option for Chicago elopement portraits because it offers a mix of architecture, light, and curated spaces. It’s ideal for couples who want something thoughtful and a little different from traditional wedding portraits.
From there, we made our way to the Wrigley Building, another iconic Chicago stop for some stunning cityscape shots. One of the best things about a City Hall elopement here is that many beautiful locations are within a short distance of each other.
The Wrigley Building offers timeless architecture and clean, elegant backdrops without requiring a long commute. For couples planning an elopement day, choosing locations close together helps you spend less time traveling and more time savoring the experience.
This is one of my biggest pieces of advice when planning your Chicago elopement: keep your stops intentional and close together. It helps the day feel relaxed — and it also means you get more time for photos without rushing.
To finish their day, we headed to the Fulton Market District, the neighborhood Megan and Ross have lived in since moving to Chicago. This final stop added an extra personal layer to their elopement, showcasing the setting of this early chapter in their story.
Even better? They included their dog in the last portion of their portraits! (My animal-loving heart couldn’t wait to meet him, and he did so well, cheesing like a pro!)
Including your pet personalizes your day and creates priceless photos. Fulton Market’s walkable streets and textures made it easy to photograph diverse moments right around the corner.
You can just as easily swap Fulton Market for your own neighborhood, so you can pick up your pup and drop them back off if needed (or hand them off to a friend or family member). We’ll do our best to schedule this part at the end to make it easier.
Ending the day in a neighborhood or location that holds meaning for you makes your elopement seem less like a formal event and more like a celebratory adventure.
One unique element of Megan and Ross’ elopement was that their day was photographed in both film and digital formats.
This mixed-medium approach creates a gallery that feels layered and timeless. Film often brings a softer, organic quality, while digital allows flexibility and spontaneity throughout the day.
The two media worked together to add depth and detail to their special day.
