I'm so glad you're here. I'm Danielle, a fine art wedding & lifestyle photographer with a focus on capturing magical moments.
The forecast said rain. Kelsey and Stefano’s photographs said romance. This Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool proposal is dreamy.
When Stefano began planning a Chicago destination surprise proposal for Kelsey, a chilly, rainy day probably wasn’t what he had imagined. The Canadian couple had traveled to the Windy City, and the Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool in Lincoln Park was waiting: quiet, dense with greenery, and removed from Chicago’s usual bustle.
Then the rain arrived.
But instead of diminishing the moment, it transformed the landscape. Water glistened across the layered stone paths. The trees appeared even greener against the gray sky, and the soft light gave every scene a slightly moody, cinematic quality. Against it all, Kelsey and Stefano were smiling ear-to-ear. What sounded like less-than-ideal proposal weather became an intimate, peaceful experience like you’d see in a romantic film.
Proposing at Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool offers something different from the skyline overlooks, rooftops, and architectural landmarks that often define Chicago engagement photos. The Lily Pool feels like a quiet escape hidden inside the city—and you can celebrate with dinner or cocktails after!
Winding paths lead around the water, while native plants, mature trees, bridges, stonework, and a small waterfall create natural layers for photographs. A lot of aesthetic intention went into the restoration of this historic Chi-town sanctuary. (Alfred Caldwell turned an old 1889 Victorian garden into a beautiful retreat in 1936, which was restored to its former glory in 2002, and the adjacent Pavilion in 2025.) The setting feels organic and romantic without requiring an elaborate setup. It is a beautiful choice for couples who want their proposal to feel private and understated rather than highly produced.
Although the Lily Pool feels secluded, it is a public landmark, and professional proposal photography requires a permit. Review the current Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool permit information before finalizing your plans. Your photographer (hi, there!) can also help determine the best timing, positioning, and route so you don’t have to solve every logistical detail from afar.
That guidance becomes especially valuable when you are planning a surprise proposal on vacation or traveling internationally, as Stefano was.
Chicago weather does not always cooperate with carefully laid plans. But rain does not automatically mean you need to cancel, relocate, or abandon the experience you envisioned.
Unless the forecast involves unsafe or severe weather, light or moderate rain can create unexpectedly beautiful conditions. Overcast skies produce soft, even light that is especially flattering in photographs. Moisture deepens the colors of leaves and plants, while reflective surfaces add texture and shine.
At the Lily Pool, wet rocks, water, and saturated greenery gave Kelsey and Stefano’s photographs a richness that a sunny afternoon would not have created in quite the same way.
Rain can also make a popular outdoor space feel calmer. People tend to move through more quickly or change their plans altogether, leaving you with a quieter atmosphere for such a personal moment.
That does not mean you should arrive unprepared. The Lily Pool does not offer shelter from the rain, so bring clear umbrellas and choose shoes that can handle damp, uneven paths. Consider a raincoat that works with your outfit rather than one you have to remove. Most importantly, allow some flexibility in your schedule. A small timing adjustment may help us avoid the heaviest part of a passing storm.
Hiring a Chicago proposal photographer goes beyond having someone there to document the moment Stefano dropped to one knee. As a local photographer, I can help you build a plan that still works even if weather, crowds, traffic, or timing change unexpectedly.
Before the proposal, I’ll help you choose the exact location, explore the available backdrops, identify where I will be waiting, and create a natural reason for your partner to walk toward the planned spot. We can also discuss a rain plan, including whether to proceed, adjust the timing, change the proposal point, or move to a nearby alternative.
On the day itself, I will watch how the light and landscape change. Rain may make one pathway slippery or crowded while making another corner of the Lily Pool especially beautiful. Then, after the “yes,” I can guide you toward the strongest settings for relaxed portraits without making the experience feel like a rigid photoshoot.
Sometimes a little local knowledge is reassuring when you are visiting Chicago and cannot scout everything yourself. You still get to keep the surprise while someone behind the scenes ensures the plan stays simple and photographically beautiful (and you can enjoy the moment to the fullest!).
It is easy to imagine a proposal beneath warm sunshine and a flawless blue sky. But the most memorable moments are not necessarily the ones in which every detail follows the original plan. Beauty happens in unexpected places and unexpected ways.
Kelsey and Stefano embraced the weather, focused on each other, and allowed the experience to unfold in the most joyful, romantic way. The rain became part of the atmosphere rather than a problem to hide.
If you are considering an Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool proposal—or exploring other romantic Chicago proposal locations—do not let an unpredictable forecast take away from your excitement. With thoughtful planning, flexibility, and a photographer prepared to adapt, even a chilly, rainy day can become the perfect beginning to your next chapter.
