I'm so glad you're here. I'm Danielle, a fine art wedding & lifestyle photographer with a focus on capturing magical moments.
A vacation already carries a little magic. You are outside your normal routine, paying closer attention and collecting memories that feel different from everyday life. Add a surprise proposal on vacation, and one sightseeing day can become a chapter your family talks about forever.
And that’s just what David had in mind for Lupita and their little boy during a visit to Chicago from Mexico City.
After exploring the Adler Planetarium, David led his family outside toward the lakefront. Lake Michigan stretched behind them, and although the weather was gray, the moment was anything but dreary. With their son right there between them, David got down on one knee and asked Lupita to marry him.
What followed happened quickly: surprise, happy tears, laughter, hugs, a ring, an excited (albeit slightly befuddled) little boy, and the realization that an ordinary family outing had just become one of the biggest days of their lives.
Planning a proposal while traveling creates an experience within the experience. The destination becomes part of your story, but the proposal does not have to feel overproduced.
For David and Lupita, Chicago offered a beautiful setting without taking away from the intimacy of the moment. Their son made the proposal even more meaningful. Instead of treating it as a romantic moment separate from family life, David included him in the beginning of this new chapter.
That is one of my favorite things about photographing proposals with children involved. Littles rarely follow a polished plan, but they bring honesty, personality, and joy. Their unpredictable reactions often become the moments families treasure most.
One of the best ways to plan a surprise proposal on vacation is to build it into an activity that already makes sense.
David and Lupita had spent the day at the Adler Planetarium, so proposing nearby felt natural. No suspicious detour was required, and Lupita did not have to wonder why the itinerary suddenly changed. They simply stepped outside, walked toward the lake, and arrived at the spot where I was ready behind the scenes.
When choosing a proposal location in an unfamiliar city, consider how it fits your itinerary, how easy it is to reach, whether your partner will feel comfortable there, and whether the setting offers room for portraits afterward.
The best location is the one that supports the experience you want to create.
Surprise proposals involve more logistics than most people expect, especially in an unfamiliar city.
A local photographer can help you choose the right spot, understand the light, avoid the busiest areas, create a believable arrival plan, and decide exactly where you should stand. We can also help with timing, weather, transportation, and what happens afterward.
Before the session, we can exchange reference photos, map the route, choose landmarks, and establish a backup plan. That preparation allows the proposal itself to feel simple to execute.
David did not need to manage every visual detail. His only job was to be present with Lupita and their son. I could focus on documenting the split-second reactions that could never be recreated later.
Chicago weather does not always cooperate, and vacation proposals often come with a date that cannot easily be changed. That does not mean the day is ruined.
The sky was overcast for David and Lupita’s proposal, but the softer light gave the images a romantic, cinematic quality. More importantly, the weather did not change the meaning of what was happening.
A strong proposal plan includes flexibility. Your photographer may recommend adjusting the time, moving nearby, using a covered area, or embracing the conditions. Wind, clouds, and even a little drizzle can add movement and atmosphere.
The goal is not a day that looks flawless on paper but to create space for a real, unforgettable moment.
The proposal may last only seconds, but the story deserves more than one photograph.
After Lupita said yes, we moved naturally into romantic post-proposal portraits, family photos, and individual images of their little boy. Nothing needed to feel overly posed. The excitement was already there, giving the portraits an energy that could not have been manufactured.
This also gave David and Lupita time to slow down, laugh, look at the ring, hold their son close, and begin enjoying the moment together.
For families traveling with children, leave room for flexibility. Your little one may need a snack, a break, or a few minutes to explore. Some of the best photographs may happen between the “planned” images.
David and Lupita’s destination surprise proposal was a whirlwind in the best possible way. So many memories were created in the blink of an eye: Lupita’s reaction, David’s excitement, their son standing between them, the lake behind them, and the joy that carried through every portrait afterward.
Planning a surprise proposal while visiting Chicago can feel intimidating, especially when you are coordinating everything from another city or country. A local photographer can help you choose the right location, create a believable plan, prepare for the weather, and make sure you know exactly where to be when the moment arrives.
Whether you are traveling as a couple or bringing your children along for the adventure, your proposal can turn your vacation into an unforgettable chapter of your life.
If you are planning a destination surprise proposal in Chicago, I would be honored to help you bring it together and preserve every reaction, embrace, and beautifully unpredictable moment.
