Another priceless proposal coming in hot, this time along the Nature Boardwalk at Lincoln Park Zoo. If you’re a Chicago native, you already know Lincoln Park Zoo is one of those rare city spots that feels iconic, easy, and romantic all at once. Free admission, paths, skyline views, native grasses, and the famous Peoples Gas Pavilion—better known as the Honeycomb—all come together in one walkable place.
All that to say: it makes a fabulous place to propose.
Adam thought so, too.
He planned Julia’s surprise proposal along the Nature Boardwalk, with the pond behind them and the Chicago skyline framed in the distance. The setting hit that sweet spot—it felt special but not necessarily staged. The moment should look beautiful, of course, but your partner should not immediately wonder why the day feels *suspiciously* perfect.
Before Julia knew what was happening, she and Adam were simply walking through one of Chicago’s prettiest public spaces. That is one of the biggest advantages of proposing at Lincoln Park Zoo: the location gives you an easy reason to be there.
A walk through the zoo? Believable. A stop by the Nature Boardwalk to take in the skyline? Let’s go! And a quick pause near the Honeycomb because the view is too good not to stop? A natural progression as well.
Then, in the middle of what felt like a normal stroll, Adam dropped to one knee.
I never get tired of photographing proposals because every one becomes its own mini love story. The seconds before the question carry so much anticipation. The reaction happens fast. The joy takes over even faster. Julia’s face moved from surprise to pure happiness, and those are the frames that make proposal photography so worth it.
Lincoln Park Zoo and the nearby Lincoln Park Conservatory work beautifully together for proposal and engagement photos because they give you variety without turning the day into a complicated production.
First, the Nature Boardwalk offers skyline views, prairie grasses, water reflections, curved pathways, and the sculptural shape of the Honeycomb. The Conservatory and formal gardens are close by, so you can move from natural, open-air portraits to more polished, garden-inspired images within minutes. The Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool adds another peaceful option with stone walkways, layered greenery, and prairie-style architecture.
Furthermore, this area also helps your photographer stay inconspicuous. Visitors are already walking, taking photos, stopping to take in the views, and enjoying the gardens. Add in the grasses, trees, and curved paths around the Nature Boardwalk, and I can blend in much more naturally than I could in an empty, quiet location. That makes the surprise easier to protect (and gives you some wiggle room).
The walk between the zoo, conservatory, gardens, and Lily Pool also keeps the post-proposal photos relaxed. We don’t have to get in a car, cross the city, or make a dramatic location change while still processing what just happened. You can breathe, laugh, admire the ring, and let the portraits unfold while the excitement still feels brand new.
After Julia said yes, we stayed nearby for a few engagement-style portraits. This short portrait time after a proposal is one of my favorite parts of the experience because the pressure drops immediately. You get to enjoy the fact that the surprise worked.
Those first portraits often feel different from a traditional engagement session because the emotion is still fresh. Hands shake a little. Smiles come quickly. Laughter feels easy. Julia and Adam’s portraits had that just-engaged glow. Plus, since you’re wrapped up in the moment, you get the best candid shots.
We used the boardwalk, skyline, natural grasses, and open pathways to create commemorative images they’ll cherish for years. I use light, natural direction for proposals so you can stay in the moment together, and the setting gave us plenty of movement, texture, and context to work with.
For couples who want engagement photos but do not love the idea of a long, formal session, a proposal followed by portraits can be a perfect middle ground. You get the candid story, the emotional reaction, and a set of polished images for announcements, wedding websites, save-the-dates, or remembering this new chapter.
Julia and Adam’s Lincoln Park Zoo surprise proposal was sweet, emotional, and beautifully Chicago. The skyline brought the drama, the boardwalk brought the romance, and their reaction brought the heart.
