Each location offered a little something different, and together they created a gallery that felt modern and dynamic. First things first. Good window light is one of the most valuable qualities a getting-ready space can offer. Large windows allow light to fall gradually across a room, creating dimension rather than illuminating everything uniformly. As your photographer, this gives me extra opportunities to create soft candid images, striking bridal portraits, silhouettes, reflections, and compositions with depth.

Pendry worked beautifully for Rachel’s portraits because the light interacted with the hotel’s darker finishes and architectural details. Meanwhile, the rooms offered pockets of light and shadow instead of making every photograph feel bright and uniform. That variety looked especially lovely when photographed using a blend of film and digital.

When viewing rooms online, consider more than the view. Notice the number and size of the windows, whether nearby buildings block the light, and how far it reaches into the room. Look Beyond the Room’s Square Footage

A spacious suite is helpful, but the number on the floor plan does not tell the entire story—furniture placement and usable open space matter just as much. A room can quickly feel crowded once hair-and-makeup teams, wedding attire, bags, food, flowers, and the wedding party arrive.

Look for enough room to move around the windows and between major pieces of furniture. Separate sitting or dressing areas can keep belongings contained while preserving a clean portrait space. Interesting chairs, mirrors, doorways, and textured walls can become part of the composition rather than obstacles.

Pendry felt both beautiful and easy to photograph. Its layout let us document natural interactions and create polished bridal portraits without making the morning feel like a production.

Choose a Hotel That Supports Your Wedding Aesthetic

Your getting-ready hotel doesn’t have to match your venue perfectly. Some contrast will make the finished gallery more interesting, especially when the goal is to choose locations that feel like different chapters of the same story.

Pendry Chicago combines contemporary styling with historic Art Deco character. It brought a polished, slightly dramatic quality to the beginning of Rachel and Ben’s day. Later, the Art Institute introduced classical architecture, symmetry, and an unmistakable sense of place to their couple and wedding-party portraits. Ovation then shifted the visual energy with its open industrial setting and lively reception atmosphere.

The locations were not identical, but none felt random. Each reflected a sophisticated, modern Chicago wedding while contributing its own textures, lines, and light.

Consider the Location as Part of Your Timeline

A centrally located Chicago wedding hotel can make the day easier. Pendry’s Loop location placed Rachel and Ben near their portrait destination at the Art Institute before everyone traveled to Ovation.

Before booking, map the hotel in relation to your stops throughout the day. Think about realistic Chicago traffic, parking, elevator wait times, and the time needed to gather everyone and their belongings. A beautiful suite loses some of its appeal if getting to the next stop adds stress or cuts the portrait schedule short.

That said, convenient does not necessarily mean choosing the closest hotel but selecting one that supports the day’s flow and leaves breathing room to enjoy your morning.

Give Film and Digital Room to Do Different Things

I photographed Rachel and Ben’s wedding on both film and digital formats. Film complemented the nuance and historic character of Pendry, while digital let me quickly adjust as the light, locations, and interactions changed—I love using digital to capture genuine emotions in the moment (with your good side in mind, of course).

At the Art Institute, both formats highlighted the architecture and movement of the couple and wedding party. Then, at Ovation, the changing light and reception energy brought another visual shift. Together, film and digital created a gallery with consistency but not sameness—romantic in one frame, crisp and editorial in the next, and wonderfully spontaneous once the party began.

Make Space for Something Unexpected

The most thoughtfully selected settings still matter because of what happens inside them. Rachel and Ben brought plenty of sweet personality to their reception and then took things up a notch by inviting their college mascot to surprise their guests. Unsurprisingly, it went over very well. The mascot gave everyone something to react to and created photographs filled with laughter and genuine surprise, plus some nostalgic pride for their alma mater. It was also a perfect reminder that a chic wedding does not have to take itself too seriously.
