A quiet rebellion in lace & light: an editorial ode to the unconventional bride
Some wedding days begin with a flurry of movement—steam rising from curling irons, laughter bouncing off the walls, hands adjusting trains, veils, vows. But on this morning, in a sun-dappled room at Milwaukee’s historic Pfister Hotel, time slowed to a hush.
This bride wasn’t rushing. She was savoring.
This was the beginning of our styled shoot with Kpoene’, the visionary behind Mignonette Bridal and Ette the Wedding Tailor. Known for her bespoke craftsmanship and imaginative spirit, Kpoene’ wanted to explore something new: artificial lighting. And I was completely captivated by the creative challenge. I was excited to shape light that felt like moonlight on silk. To drape shadows across lace in just the right way. To craft something timeless with contemporary tools.
But it wasn’t just the lighting that made this day feel like a dream stitched in velvet. It was the spirit of the story we were telling—one of quiet rebellion, artistic expression, and the many versions of beauty that a bride can embody.
She sits by the window, light filtering in like warm milk through gauze. She is not in a hurry.
No entourage, no flurry of footsteps or perfectly timed playlists—just the soft rustle of silk and the fizz of poured champagne.
Our first muse wore a corseted Mignonette gown that slipped gently off the shoulder in carefree elegance. A modern-day Holly Golightly with a touch of defiance, she embodied the anti-bride: elegant yet untamed. My lens loved her quiet confidence and pensive poise. These compositions remind us that beauty can be soft and unstructured and that grace lives in the in-between moments.
Next, we tucked in a mini boudoir session—intimate, effortless, and subtly romantic. I love reminding brides that a full session isn’t always necessary; sometimes, just ten intentional minutes can create something personal and intimate. For fun, we captured Polaroids. These tangible keepsakes can be flirtly little secrets to slip under the groom’s door for a pre-ceremony flutter of anticipation. A wink across the hall. A page from a private story.
Want to surprise your partner? Let’s make space in your timeline for a mini boudoir session. Not only will your other half get a seductive surprise, but you’ll have fun doing it, too. A little creative time to yourself is a great way to shake any nerves or stress. The planning is done. Let the pieces fall into place while you savor your day.
Then came velvet halls and Victorian whispers.
In one of The Pfister’s most ornate rooms, we painted a contrast between past and present. Our bride—tattooed, sleeveless, ethereal—stood tall in a gown that might have once graced a 19th-century ballroom. Her presence felt like a bridge between centuries: old-world opulence meeting modern fashion. It was all candlelight and carved wood, the kind of setting where stories (and secrets) live forever.
Something about this moment caught my breath in the best way. Like stumbling upon a forgotten love letter or hearing the opening notes of a song you didn’t know you missed.
Next, we dialed up the drama—and the dream.
Two muses, two gowns, one vision of romantic maximalism.
One model wore a soft, floral pastel indigo gown with delicate detachable puff sleeves. The other looked lovely in an ethereal peach gown with embroidered flowers blooming across her bodice and sleeves. Their hair, swept into Victorian-esque updos, carried just the right amount of vintage glamour.
Together, they looked like characters from a European love story, ornate lion statues and all! Perhaps they’re sisters escaping a chateau, or bridesmaids waiting beneath stained-glass windows. There was movement, mischief, and wonder. It felt like a painting come to life.
We ended our session with intimate, glamorous close-ups. A muted red lip. A birdcage veil casting soft shadows. It was the perfect way to end the session (and hopefully it’s just enough intrigue to inspire your own creative bridal vision).
These are the moments I treasure—the quiet in-betweens, the soft focus, the way fabric folds.
Kpoene’s gowns shone in every setting, not just for their craftsmanship and detail, but for their soul. They are made for women by women who see wedding days not as a performance, but as a poem and who know that beauty doesn’t have to shout to be heard.
To the bride who finds her rhythm in old records and thrifted novels, who dreams in sepia tones and believes in the magic of mood lighting—this is your permission to bloom your way. If you are a bride who finds beauty in the cracks of old walls, who feels most alive among paintings and poetry and wildflower fields—this kind of styling might speak to you.
Let your wedding morning be slow and intentional. Light candles. Drink something bubbly (in a coffee cup!). Dance barefoot. Say yes to a mini boudoir session that feels like a love letter to yourself.
Think of your gown not just as a garment, but as an extension of your story. Whether it’s Victorian-inspired lace or a blush silk slip, let it feel like you. Not the version someone else expects, but the truest version—unfiltered and luminous.
And if you want to send Polaroids to your partner mid-morning? Let it be cheeky and charming. Let it be yours. This is your day and your canvas—your love story told in textures and tones. The rules are soft and the moments are fleeting—so make them count. When you look back, let it not just be about the cake, the shoes, or the seating chart, but about how you felt. Seen. Beautiful. Unapologetically you.
