I'm so glad you're here. I'm Danielle, a fine art wedding & lifestyle photographer with a focus on capturing magical moments.
Imagine strolling hand-in-hand through cobblestone streets, bathed in the golden Tuscan sunlight. THIS is the magic of an engagement session in Lucca, Italy. As a destination wedding photographer, I live for moments like these. I’m excited to take you behind the scenes of Alina and Charlie’s unforgettable engagement session in the heart of Tuscany.
You may remember Alex and Kathlina from their ethereal engagement session at Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats. Their connection, sense of adventure, and love of traveling inspired another chapter of this love story. Fast forward to their breathtaking destination wedding in Lucca, Italy—a celebration of love, culture, and everything magical about Tuscany.
While I was there photographing Alex and Kathlina’s milestone moment, Alex’s sister Alina and her fiancé Charlie were just beginning their own story. As luck (and some very aligned stars) would have it, I had the honor of capturing their engagement photos in this city of art and history. Talk about a photographer’s dream!
Lucca is full of camera-loving nooks and crannies. The city provided the perfect backdrop for a romantic session. Quaint, flower-draped piazzas led to winding streets lined with cream-colored buildings. And just like Alex and Kathlina, Alina and Charlie were brimming with the spirit of travel, adventure, and love. Being able to document these two couples in such meaningful ways left me utterly inspired (and longing to travel back to Italy–wink, wink).
Alina and Charlie’s photoshoot took us on a scenic tour of Lucca. We spent the most perfect day meandering through Lucca’s charming plazas and paths. The quiet streets bloomed with vibrant flowerpots, and hidden alcoves invited us to pause. Each turn presented us with a photo opportunity more magical than the last (I mean, we’re talking Italy—how could it not?).
I decided to shoot their session on film, a medium that perfectly matched the timeless allure of Lucca. Film photography has the unique ability to subtly blur edges, highlight focal points, and add a dreamy, nostalgic quality to each frame—perfect for the gentle warmth of Tuscany. The romantic, cinematic feel captured the essence of Alina and Charlie’s engagement vibes beautifully.
Some highlights from the session? The iconic red Vespa shots and the colorful carousel were pleasant surprises along our walk. What I loved most was how travel, connection, and storytelling intertwined. Every street corner, courtyard café, and sunlit wall provided inspiration—capturing Alina and Charlie’s authentic chemistry and personalities.
And next year? We’re reconnecting for their wedding celebration at the Jersey Shore—I can’t wait to see their next chapter unfold.
You don’t need to cross oceans for engagement photos to feel like a meaningful adventure.
Alex and Kathlina chose Utah’s shimmering salt flats because it fit their personalities, vision, and love for exploring unique landscapes. Alina and Charlie chose Italy for similar heartfelt reasons (and we were already there).
Your ideal setting might even be a nearby city you’ve always loved or a scenic spot that’s part of your relationship’s story. The goal isn’t distance but creating a meaningful experience that reflects your connection.
Destination engagement sessions are unlike anything else. They combine your love story with a location you’re passionate about—or curious to explore.
Just picture it:
These places will form sweet memories, making them even more special. It’s not just about the photos (though those will be breathtaking); it’s about the layered, meaningful experience of creating them.
If you’re considering a destination engagement session (and my advice is to go for it!), here are a few tips to help:
The location sets the tone for your session, so choose somewhere meaningful. Is there a city or landscape you’ve always dreamed of visiting? Does a particular destination hold sentimental value for your relationship? Whether it’s the cozy charm of Lucca, the scenic trails of Wilmot Mountain (an hour from Chicago), or the sparkling waters of the Finger Lakes, pick a place that resonates with you both.
Destination shoots often rely on natural light and weather conditions. Research the best times to visit your chosen location for a pleasant experience and ideal lighting. Early mornings and golden hour (just before sunset) are the best times for soft, flattering light.
Keep your outfits location-appropriate and cohesive. Think stylish yet timeless. Flowing dresses, muted earthy tones, and comfy flats (you may be walking a lot!) work beautifully in most dreamy destinations. Don’t forget weather-appropriate accessories like hats, scarves, or boots if needed.
Choosing the right photographer for a destination shoot is so important. You’ll want someone who knows how to work quickly on location, handle unpredictable conditions, and make travel logistics a breeze. Many photographers (like me!) are experienced in planning and navigating destination sessions, so don’t hesitate to ask for advice.
Consider making your engagement session part of a longer trip. Spend a few extra days exploring the area and soak up all the sights and sounds before or after the shoot. This is your love story—make it an adventure to remember.
Dream big when it comes to your location, but understand that destination shoots might come with a bit of extra planning or unexpected twists. Popular locations might require shoot permits, and the weather can sometimes surprise you. Take it all in stride—these moments are part of what makes destination sessions such unique experiences.
While Lucca’s magic is hard to beat, you don’t have to travel across the globe for a destination engagement session. Beautiful, memorable locations might be closer than you think. Beaches, deserts, mountains, and even your favorite city skyline (ahem, Chicago) can set the stage for stunning engagement photos. The most important thing? Capturing your chemistry as a couple and setting the tone for your new adventure together.
If you’re dreaming of an unforgettable engagement session—whether it’s near home or across the ocean—don’t hesitate to reach out. As your destination wedding photographer, I’d love to hear your story, explore ideas, and help coordinate logistics to create something truly magical.
Your love story deserves to be celebrated—wherever it takes you.
