Chicago offers so many iconic backdrops for engagement photos. However, one of the most versatile and memorable options for couples is a Chicago studio and outdoor engagement session, captured on digital and film photography, that blends bold editorial portraits with relaxed, natural moments.
Ava and Sam are the kind of couple every photographer hopes to work with—they’re incredibly photogenic (truly, they could pass for professional models). But, they’re also warm, playful, and effortlessly kind. Spending time with them feels less like working with clients and more like hanging out with (very stylish) friends.
Their idea to split their engagement session between a studio and an outdoor location was perfect for Ava and Sam. It allowed them to express two completely different sides of their relationship. Visually, the contrast made the gallery even more compelling.
We began the session in a bright, minimalist studio in Chicago. The space featured clean white walls, striking black architectural lines, and beautiful natural light. This clean, minimalist setting is ideal for the modern, editorial look Ava envisioned.
Their wardrobe choices elevated the look even further. Ava wore a chic black two-piece pant set with a sleeveless peplum top that felt sophisticated and fashion-forward. Sam complemented (not matched!) perfectly in a monochrome black outfit, pairing a smart casual V-neck top with tailored chinos.
Against the studio’s neutral palette and warm wood floors, their all-black ensembles created the most striking contrast. The look felt bold, romantic, and editorial—I fully expect to see these two in a wedding magazine!
But beyond the fashion-forward aesthetic, this portion of the session carried deeper, more personal meaning.
Ava brought along photographs of her parents from earlier in their relationship, and she and Sam wanted to recreate a few of those images together. As soon as she showed them to me, I knew this was going to be one of those emotional, memory-filled moments that make photography so meaningful.
Watching them step into poses that mirrored Ava’s parents’ photos was incredibly touching. It felt like a quiet tribute to the love story that came before theirs—a visual thread connecting generations. Unsurprisingly, there were a few happy tears (mine included) in the studio that afternoon.
And it didn’t stop there! One of my favorite memories from the session happened near the end of our studio time.
I was adjusting the lighting setup and asked Ava to stand in while I tested the light. She casually stepped into position, and with the warm sunlight falling across her face, she looked radiant (literally).
Behind the camera, I noticed Sam’s reaction almost immediately.
He started tearing up.
It was the sweetest, most genuine moment—one of those unscripted reactions that tells you everything about how someone feels. Sam couldn’t stop smiling through the tears as he looked at Ava, overwhelmed by how beautiful she looked.
Thankfully, I was already holding the camera, clicking away.
Moments like that are exactly why I love documenting the in-between parts of a session just as much as the posed portraits. Engagement sessions aren’t just about a handful of perfect images—they’re about telling the story of a couple in real time.
Ava and Sam’s Chicago studio and outdoor engagement session had so many of those little moments that made the story even richer.
After the studio portion, we headed to a quiet park along the lake for the outdoor half of their session.
The shift in scenery created an entirely new mood. Where the studio felt bold and editorial, the park setting felt soft, relaxed, and carefree.
Ava changed into a flowing cream-colored dress that moved beautifully in the breeze, while Sam switched into khakis paired with a classic blue button-down. The lighter tones immediately softened the overall look, blending perfectly with the natural landscape and gentle lake light.
Chicago’s lakefront has a way of making everything feel expansive and peaceful. With open sky, rustling grasses, and the distant shimmer of the water, the atmosphere felt calm and romantic.
In this natural space, Ava and Sam leaned into the playful side of their relationship—twirling and strolling along quiet paths, laughing between poses, and soaking in the final moments of golden light.
The contrast between the two parts of the session made the gallery so special. One half captured their bold, fashion-forward side, while the other highlighted their easygoing, joyful connection.
Ava and Sam’s engagement session is a perfect example of why combining locations can be such a great idea.
By including both a studio and an outdoor location, couples can explore different styles, moods, and wardrobe looks in a single session. It allows the final gallery to feel layered and dynamic while still telling one cohesive story.
The studio provided a timeless, editorial feel that put the focus squarely on their connection, expressions, and style. Meanwhile, the outdoor park offered movement, softness, and that beautiful sense of natural ease.
Together, the two settings created a gallery that felt complete—bold yet romantic, polished yet playful.
More than anything, Ava and Sam’s engagement session reminded me that the best photos often happen in the moments you don’t plan.
The recreated family portraits, Sam tearing up while watching Ava, the laughter between outfit changes, and the quiet walk along the lake. Each moment added another layer to the story of their relationship.
Your engagement photos should reflect who you are together, not just how you look in front of the camera. Ava and Sam absolutely brought the style, but they also brought warmth, humor, and heart.
I’d photograph these two anytime. Photographing Ava and Sam felt effortless and so much fun! These two might look like models, but they’re even better as the incredibly sweet, joyful, in-love couple they truly are.
