I'm so glad you're here. I'm Danielle, a fine art wedding & lifestyle photographer with a focus on capturing magical moments.
Bailey and Parker traveled from Michigan with a clear vision: a full-on Chicago elopement experience. They love to travel and try new things together, so a Chicago Athletic Association elopement was a perfect fit. As we planned their day together, they explained they didn’t want it to feel too structured and envisioned an adventurous, romantic day that unfolded naturally. So, we built out a flexible ‘itinerary’ with noteworthy stops, great light, and space to enjoy each other’s company. I highly recommend this approach, striking a balance between structure and flexibility. If it’s too spontaneous, you may find the day a bit stressful as you piece it together on the fly, especially if you aren’t super familiar with the location. I want you to be able to take it all in without worrying about what’s next.
They chose the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel as the foundation for their day, and it set the tone from the start. Built in 1893, this Venetian Gothic landmark has layers of history in every corner, from intricate woodwork to vintage details. Once reserved for dignitaries and private members, it now stands as a downtown destination across from Millennium Park—still rich with character, but open, welcoming, and full of life. It’s the kind of venue where the historic setting does the work for you.
For couples planning a Chicago Athletic Association elopement, this is one of the biggest advantages: you can move through multiple distinct spaces—moody interiors, sunlit rooms, historic hallways—without ever leaving the building. The flexibility helps couples feel inspired and confident that their day can be uniquely tailored to their personalities and style.
Bailey and Parker started their day inside the hotel, getting ready in spaces filled with natural light and texture. These quieter moments can get overlooked in elopement timelines, but they matter. Hair and makeup, detail shots, the anticipation before a first look—these are the pieces that make your story feel complete.
Bailey’s shoes, rings, and bouquet were simple yet stunning, photographed against the hotel’s layered backdrops. No extra setup needed.
One of the benefits of choosing a venue like the Chicago Athletic Association is that it allows for a full wedding-day experience, even on a smaller scale. Instead of sacrificing moments, you’re refining them.
After their first look inside the hotel, Bailey and Parker stepped out into the city and headed toward the Art Institute of Chicago for portraits.
The walk itself became a festive part of their experience.
People stopped to clap. Strangers waved. And at one point, a full school bus of kids cheered them on. The moment wasn’t staged or planned; it just happened because they were open to it. That’s one of the most underrated parts of a Chicago elopement: the city shows up for you if you let it.
For couples considering a similar route, building in time to move between locations—on foot, if possible—can turn travel into one of the most memorable parts of the day. It also creates natural, candid photo opportunities that you simply can’t replicate.
At the Art Institute, we shifted into a more editorial style. The architecture, the scale, and the clean lines all contrast beautifully with the energy of the streets. This combination of candid and composed images gave their gallery a lot of depth without requiring extra locations.
From there, we headed to Chicago City Hall, where Bailey and Parker met their parents for their ceremony.
Note: It’s helpful to know that Chicago requires a marriage license, which can be obtained in advance, so planning ahead ensures a smooth legal process.
City Hall ceremonies may be brief and visually understated, but that doesn’t diminish their impact. In fact, it can do the opposite. With fewer distractions, the focus stays exactly where it should be—on you two! As a Chicago elopement photographer, I focus on your faces, body language, and connection so the plain setting fades into the background. You deserve to have photos you love from your vow exchange, even at the courthouse (which is your cue to lean into those precious few minutes)!
The room itself may not have been elaborate, but their expressions told the whole story. My camera zoomed in on the way they looked at each other, the sweet reactions from their parents, and the moment it all became official.
For couples planning a Chicago Athletic Association elopement, incorporating a City Hall ceremony is a practical and meaningful option. It keeps the logistics simple while still allowing you to build a full, intentional day around it.
After the ceremony, we made our way back to the Chicago Athletic Association to wrap up the day.
This is where things shifted again—this time to something more playful and flirty. Bailey and Parker were drawn to direct flash photography for the bar scenes, which gave their final set of images a bold, energetic feel. Think crisp shadows, a bit of edge, and a departure from the softer natural light we used earlier in the day.
At the end of the day, they leaned into a more celebratory pace. They may not have had a full dinner reception, but they made room to be present and enjoy their newlywed status, with cake and wine, of course!
This is another key takeaway for couples: your elopement doesn’t need a traditional structure to feel complete. A simple ending—dessert, drinks, a favorite restaurant—can feel just as meaningful as a full reception.
Bailey and Parker’s day is a great example of how flexible and full an elopement can be. They kept things simple but didn’t skip over important moments.
A Chicago Athletic Association elopement works especially well because:
By the end of our time together, it felt like they had experienced a full wedding day—with elopement energy and spontaneity.
Getting ready, a first look, portraits across the city, a ceremony with family, and a simple celebration to close it out. Nothing was rushed, nothing felt forced.
It was a whirlwind, but it came together seamlessly.
If you’re starting to imagine what your big day in Chicago could look like, I’d love to help you map it out in a way that fits your vision.
